Apple introduced the new version of its most affordable iPhone model, iPhone 17e, with a press release on March 2, 2026.

Compared to last year's iPhone 16e, the new iPhone 17e offers more base storage, supports MagSafe accessories, and comes in a new pink color that may attract many buyers.

Here are 9 reasons that can help you decide whether to buy the iPhone 17e.

1. 256 GB Base Storage

Apple refreshed the entire iPhone 17 series with a 256 GB base storage option last year, and the more affordable 17e model is not excluded from this practice. Although it has the same starting price as the iPhone 16e, the new 17e offers double the storage, allowing you to store more photos, videos, games, and other files on the device.

2. MagSafe Support

The new iPhone 17e supports MagSafe, allowing you to easily align and attach compatible wireless chargers, phone stands, wallets, and other accessories to the back of your phone. MagSafe was introduced with the iPhone 12, but its absence in the iPhone 16e was a significant drawback; this issue has been addressed by Apple with the latest version.

3. New Soft Pink Color

While I love the white/silver models of Apple products, many people find plain white or black boring. The iPhone 17e improves this situation by adding a stunning new light pink color, in addition to the white and black versions (there were only two color options for the 16e).

4. Ceramic Shield 2

Apple did not cut corners with the front screen protection of the iPhone 17e and used the same Ceramic Shield 2 glass used across the entire iPhone 17 series. Apple states that Ceramic Shield 2 is more durable than any smartphone glass and that 'the Apple-designed coating provides 3 times better scratch resistance compared to the previous generation and offers improved anti-reflective properties to reduce glare.'

5. Improved Cellular Modem and Privacy

The iPhone 16e used the Apple-designed C1 5G cellular modem chip. The new iPhone 17e adopts the upgraded C1X chip, which is expected to deliver 2 times faster cellular data performance than the previous generation. Apple also mentions that the new C1X chip consumes 30% less battery compared to the modem in the iPhone 16 Pro.

Additionally, both the C1 and C1X chips support a new privacy feature called ‘Limit Location Precision’, which reduces the accuracy of location data shared with cellular networks, allowing them to only determine your approximate location.

6. Improved Wireless Fast Charging

Like the iPhone 16e, you can charge your iPhone 17e to 50% in about 30 minutes using a 20-watt or higher adapter and a USB-C cable. However, the real improvement comes from the iPhone 17e's support for the faster Qi2 protocol, allowing it to charge up to 15 watts when using a 20W or higher adapter.

Note: The iPhone 17 can charge wirelessly up to 25 watts.

7. A19 Chip

The most affordable iPhone in Apple's current lineup (Apple has retained the iPhone 16, but this model is $100 more expensive than the 17e) features the powerful A19 chip, which is the same as the one in the iPhone 17. However, it's worth noting that the A19 chip in the iPhone 17e has four GPU cores, while the same-named chip in the iPhone 17 has five GPU cores.

8. Other Features

Like last year's iPhone 16e, the new iPhone 17e retains the following features:

  • same dimensions in all parameters (height, width, and depth)
  • same 6.1-inch OLED display and the same brightness levels (maximum 800 nits brightness and 1200 nits peak brightness when watching HDR content)
  • the same battery that Apple claims supports video playback time of up to 26 hours
  • the same IP68 splash, dust, and water resistance
  • the same Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6
  • the same emergency features (satellite messaging, satellite emergency SOS, satellite roadside assistance, and car accident detection)
  • almost the same 48MP Fusion Main camera and the same optical zoom options (1x and 2x) with the same video recording capabilities (up to 4K at 60 fps)
  • the same TrueDepth front camera, capturing 12MP photos
  • Action button
  • Apple Intelligence support

9. Same Starting Price of $599

Apple did not raise the price of the iPhone 17e, and the base storage version (currently 256 GB) still starts at $599. The 512 GB version is sold for $799.

However, in some countries like India, the price of the new iPhone 17e has increased compared to the iPhone 16e; this has happened subtly, as it has with the rest of the iPhone 17 series. The iPhone 16e starts at 59900 Indian Rupees, while the 17e starts at 64900 Rupees.

Who Should Buy the New iPhone 17e?

The iPhone 17e does not have a 120Hz high refresh rate display and comes with the old Face ID notch, which makes the device look immediately outdated; however, it remains a good option for current iPhone users looking to upgrade from the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, or iPhone SE.

Older devices are significantly lagging on iOS 26; you won't feel this with the new iPhone 17e, as it has a powerful A19 processor. Additionally, the new phone is expected to receive at least 5 years of software updates, whereas the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 may not support the upcoming iOS 27; this update will be announced in 3 months.

If you are using an iPhone 15, the notch-based design will be a downgrade from the modern-looking Dynamic Island; however, if you are among the minority wanting Apple Intelligence, you might want to consider the new iPhone 17e.

If you are using an iPhone 16e, the only reason to upgrade would be the lack of MagSafe.

And if you are using an iPhone 16, the iPhone 17e may not be suitable for you. If you have the 128GB model, consider managing your space using these tips instead of getting the new 17e.
