Learn how to mark your AirTag as lost and add your phone number and email address so that the person who finds it can contact you and return the item.

Like the iPhone, you can activate Lost Mode for your lost AirTag or supported third-party tracking devices in the Find My network.

Lost Mode allows the finder to see a message indicating that the item is lost, along with your phone number or email address.

If someone finds your lost AirTag or third-party tracking device, they can use an iPhone or NFC-enabled Android phone to visit the webpage showing your Apple Lost Mode message and phone number.

Activate Lost Mode for AirTag or Other Items

1) Open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

2) Go to the Items tab and select your lost AirTag or third-party item tracking device.

3) Tap on Show Contact Info in the Lost AirTag section.

4) Read more about this and tap Continue.

5) Enter your phone number so the finder can contact you and tap Continue. If you do not want to disclose your mobile number, tap Use Email Address and enter that information instead.

6) Make sure the “Notify When Found” switch is turned on so that you receive a notification when your lost AirTag comes in contact with other iPhones, iPads, or Macs and its location is sent to you. Review the phone number and Lost Mode message (which is a message you cannot customize for AirTags, just like on iPhone), then tap Show Info.

Lost Mode has been successfully activated on this AirTag or third-party tracking device in the Find My network. Now your only hope is that a kind person finds the item attached to your AirTag and can see your contact information so they can return it.

How Can the Finder See Your Contact Information to Return the Item?

When someone finds your AirTag or other tracking device, they will need to bring the white part of the AirTag close to the top of their iPhone or the top of their NFC-enabled Android phone. This way, they can go to found.apple.com and see your Lost Mode message and phone number or email address.

Let's see how it looks on Android:

Tip: Don't forget to enable NFC from the quick settings panel on your Android phone.

They can also learn more about the AirTag by using Apple's Tracker Detect Android app. However, this app has low ratings and does not work very reliably.

Change Your Phone Number or Turn Off Lost Mode

  1. Open the Find My app and select your AirTag in the Items section.
  2. Tap on Show Contact Info.
  3. Edit your phone number or email address and tap the checkmark. Or tap Remove Contact Info or Hide Info to turn off Lost Mode.
